A canister of Body Spray was inserted on one person's anus. Yes, it really required thorough operation to remove the canister especially since it wasn't supposed to be where it was.
We were all shocked when the news about the Cebu Canister Bottle broke out and a video has been spread.
The video showed the patient being operated on as doctors, interns, nurses and student nurses watched. It wasn't actually a big deal, but as the people around have started laughing at the unconscious patient and when the video has been pointed on the patient's operated site, then it became a moral issue.
As I've watched the whole uncut video, I couldn't help but feel ashamed because I am also a nurse and I've already experienced assisting an operation.
The one taking the video was narrating what happened to the patient while on the background, the surgeon and his assistants were laughing and making fun of the procedure.
It was also disturbing to see the operating room look like a party place in the video. Supposedly, the only allowed people inside an OR were the surgeon, the assistant surgeon, the scrub nurse, the circulating nurse, a couple of nursing students and their clinical instructors.
But in the video, I've seen several students, nurses and doctors as well, as if they were watching some Record Breaking show and cheering upon it.
It was really a shame in the medical field. Supposedly, we were the ones who are supposed to promote the patient's health and welfare by treating them, taking care of them, and respecting their confidentiality.
The patient's face may not have been exposed in the video, but all the people who were inside the OR knew him and as the video spread throughout cellphones and streaming sites, more and more people were able to find out about the identity of the patient or shall we say, the victim.
The scandal was even worse than any other sex scandal that I've seen, for it didn't only show the patient's private parts, it also violated the person's human rights and it also showed the unprofessional-ism of the doctors and nurses who were involved in the operation.
I don't deny that at some point during one of my assistances in an operation, we couldn't help but joke around and laugh around the case that we were working on, but the scandal that happened in Cebu was a different story. There, they didn't only simply joke around, but they also abused the person's right to privacy without even asking his permission.
Even if the Priests of Cebu blamed the victim for his immoral acts which resulted to having the canister bottle up his private part wasn't convincing. Because setting aside what the patient did prior to the operation, the fact that these medical professionals have done something out of the morality of one human being was what was in issue. It'll still be the same perhaps even if the patient wasn't that guy who's got a canister up his rectum. Maybe even if it was a different patient, this could still have happened.
I just hope that justice for the victim can be achieved in a short time and I hope that those medical staff who were involved should have their licenses revoked for a lifetime.

Yeah, the video disgusts me too. I never really thought they could do such thing.
Now I'm really scared to go to operating rooms. lol x]
hahaha!! vicente sotto is a government hospital. if you wanna be safe, it's better to pay a bigger amount on exclusive hospies. =]

this was so unkindly. i didn't think surgeons who swore to do their duties as it should be could do that.
MIKE: i agree with you. sometimes, there are certain human rights that people, even professionals take for granted. i just hope what happened in cebu will be a lesson not only to medical professionals but to other professionals as well. =]
